is a chalkboard
scratched and erased
by white-tail deer by the herds
by the onesies a bobcat
a fresh family of foxes
a half-dozen kits
challenging each other to climb our plate glass front door
they threw themselves at it like a trampoline
each great fox future no heavier than a child's glove
as cute as any fox kit you can imagine right now
without the glass we could have kissed them that night
we watched TV. the fox kits bounced off our front door, under the porch light
I saw a house cat and a fawn play together in our front yard
here in our purview, here in the "wilds"
not quite suburbs you had to have at least 4.6 acres if you were newcomers
for the last almost-50 years
second growth was super-healthy
makes Darwin proud = surrounds us like a moat
in Foster, our late structure on this ancient land
we here since 1988
abonevibrationpickax through turf
banging off
that lovely tool rediscovered the gabbro volcanic vent uphill in our back yard
my roots went deep after that
nature isn't a nice neighbor, though
not unless you are med-school prepared
the doily lace that clouds my understanding of life
it doesn't prepare you
First I found the fox kits' heads
then I followed a downward spiraling flock of turkey buzzards
to see the bodies, 50 feet away I don't know what
delighted predator got them all, an entire
generation from that mom
fisher cats have a vicious reputation in our region
capable of
reducing a flock of house pets to
"missing" posters in no time
