Aylan drowned and washed ashore near a Turkish resort on September 2. His family had fled ISIS fighting and was attempting to reach Greece and a non-combatant life in Europe when their boat capsized and the boy slipped from his father's wet grasp. A dozen others died in the same tragedy, including Aylan's 5-year-old brother. Their despondent father was among those rescued. "Wednesday’s dead were part of a grim toll of some 2,500 people who have died this summer attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, according to the UN refugee agency, UNHCR," The Guardian reported.

I lost my passport on the flight back from Paris. On the plane. Somewhere. While speaking only French to the attendants. I am finally, after 15 years, trying to learn the language, at least at the kindergarten level. Simone and I talk in French as we interact now. Her patience is the stuff of Marvel comics.
